Things To See/Do in Madrid
Malaga is one of Spain’s most under-rated cities. The birthplace of Picasso is home to a range of world class restaurants, bars and historical attractions.
Malaga is a world away from the nearby coastal resorts of the Costa del Sol, where English is more commonly spoken than Spanish and fried breakfasts replace traditional tortillas.
The Picasso Museum is by far Malaga’s most popular tourist draws and has in recent years, led to the rise of boutique hotels and upmarket restaurants. In the city’s historic centre, the Moorish fortress and Christian castle nestle happily side by side, both overlooking an attractive cathedral and upmarket shopping streets, as well as a web of narrow pedestrian streets within the old town. Eating out in Malaga.
Just outside the busy port, the beach is equally picturesque. Sandy stretches of coastline are located along the eastern suburbs, where traditional fried fish is always accompanied by a cold beer at a chirunguitos (beach bar). With such wonderful attractions on its doorstep, Malaga is much more than a gateway town - it’s a fully formed destination.
Malaga’s Calle Marques de Larios is the city’s main shopping avenue and offers plenty of chic clothing stores. Local specialities include leather bags and shoes, embroidery, iron work and ceramics. Meanwhile, El Corte Ingles on Avenida de Andalucia is home to a multi-storey department store selling all sorts of goods. Those looking to sample some authentic local cuisine will find delicious food at the Atarazana market which is open every day until 2pm.
This area of Spain is sometimes called the “Costa del Golf” due to its 39 courses, its year round sunny weather and its reasonable course fees. Meanwhile, watersports enthusiasts will discover a range of fun activities including scuba diving, sailing, kite surfing and wind surfing.
